Sealing Drafts

by Bonita Crawford

Drafts can result in excessively warm interiors during summer or chilly temperatures in winter, while also contributing to higher heating and cooling expenses. Windows and doors typically serve as major sources of drafts within homes, making it crucial to possess the skill of sealing them effectively. Various options are available depending on the location of the draft: installing weatherstripping, utilizing gap filler, and caulking gaps are all straightforward and effective methods to ensure a draft-free home.

Steps to Seal Drafts:

1. Identify the drafts: Walk around your home and carefully inspect windows, doors, electrical outlets, baseboards, and any other areas where drafts may be present. Look for gaps, cracks, or areas where you can feel cold air coming in.
2. Gather the necessary materials:
*Weather-stripping: This can be adhesive-backed foam, V-strip, or door sweeps.
* Caulk: Choose a caulk that is appropriate for the material you are sealing, such as silicone caulk for windows or doors.
*Draft stoppers: These can be used for doors that have gaps at the bottom.
3. Seal windows and doors: Apply weather-stripping around the edges of windows and doors to create a tight seal. Use caulk to fill in any gaps or cracks around the frames. Install door sweeps at the bottom of exterior doors to prevent drafts.
4. Seal electrical outlets: Remove the cover plates from electrical outlets and switches. Install foam gaskets behind the cover plates to create a seal between the outlet box and the wall. Reinstall the cover plates.
5. Seal baseboards and trim: Use caulk to fill in any gaps or cracks between baseboards, trim, and the wall. Smooth the caulk with a caulk smoothing tool or your finger.
6. Seal air vents and ducts: Use foil tape or mastic sealant to seal any leaks or gaps in air vents and ducts. Ensure that the connections are tight and secure.
7. Install draft stoppers: For doors that have gaps at the bottom, install draft stoppers or door sweeps to prevent drafts from coming in.
8. Test for drafts: After sealing the drafts, carefully inspect the areas again to ensure that the drafts have been effectively sealed. You can use your hand to feel for any remaining drafts or use a draft detector tool.
